Internships can be like the cherry on top of your college sundae. They are a place where you can bring your academic knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. Beyond that, it’s a great way to explore different career paths, gain practical experience, and build professional networks. Whether you are on the lookout for your internship or in the middle of your third placement, the Career Services team put together some tips on how to get the most out of your experience.
1) Get clear on expectations and goals from the start
When you and your supervisor co-create goals that are specific and measurable, it sets you up for success and helps you make the most of your time.
2) Document your tasks and accomplishments
Keep a running record of everything throughout your internship so that you can easily add this experience to future resumes. Document projects and tasks that you’ve been working on (with quantifiable details), the skills you’re using, and all outcomes of your work (How many people attended that event you organized? Did the organization implement the new guide you created?) Learn more about talking about your experience on resumes and informational interviews.
3) Ask questions and be proactive
Internships are a learning opportunity and nobody expects you to know everything, so don’t pretend like you do. Ask questions whenever you need clarity or guidance to make sure you’re meeting expectations. Don’t just wait to be assigned tasks – actively seek them out.
4) Ask for feedback
Regularly check in with your supervisor to talk about how things are going. Ask for specific feedback on your work and performance rather than making assumptions about what’s going well and what areas you need to grow in. (This is also an important competency expected of professionals and will impress your supervisor!)
5) Intentionally build your network
Talk to your supervisor about your career goals and ask for introductions to other people you can learn from, both inside and outside the organization. Do informational interviews to start establishing new connections.
